Bosch predictive diagnostics

Car breakdowns are annoying and costly. In many cases, equipment failures can be avoided through preventative maintenance. But how to find out when is the right time for this?

Bosch offers automakers an innovative predictive diagnostic software solution that continuously monitors, evaluates and reports on the status of components and systems in a car. Based on the data of the connected vehicle, as well as cloud information, malfunctions can be predicted and corrected on time individually according to the condition of the car.

Optimized maintenance with predictive diagnostics reduces the overall cost of operating the vehicle and increases its availability. This is beneficial to manufacturers, fleet operators and private users. Regardless of whether you are going on vacation, transporting cargo, or working on a large construction site off-highway, predictive diagnostic equipment can help prevent unexpected breakdowns by reliably predicting system and component failures.

With predictive diagnostics, car drivers or dispatchers will be aware of the current and future state of their vehicles, as well as any scheduled repairs. The technology allows not only to identify the fault, but also to determine the most suitable moment for its elimination, so that this work can be combined with the already planned maintenance. This reduces the number of maintenance visits to the absolute minimum required. Depending on the type of vehicle and the conditions of use, this can save up to several hundred euros per year per vehicle.

The work of the predictive diagnostic system is constructed as follows:

  • Monitoring

Sensors continuously monitor the status of components and systems and transmit information to the control unit.

  • Collection

The intelligent information pre-selection function limits data traffic through the CAN bus and to the server to a minimum.

  • Transfer

The communication module analyzes, combines and encrypts the received data and transmits it to the central server, including the location of the equipment.

  • Analysis and evaluation

The software on the central server makes an accurate analysis and assessment of the technical condition of the vehicle. For this purpose, additional criteria are included, such as park data, vehicle maintenance experience, already known and potential malfunctions.

  • Service forecast for vehicle manufacturer (OEM)

The software calculates the likely remaining component life and transfers this information to the OEM. (Example: starter battery will fail after 2 500 km).

  • Driver notification

For each system, the automaker can use individual settings and determine how and in what form the information will be presented to the driver. For example, notify him of an error and inform about the need to adjust the planned route.

  • Organization of visits to the service station

Timely troubleshooting saves time and money: using predictive diagnostics, you can more effectively schedule service station visits and vehicle maintenance.

Intelligent data processing instead of transferring large amounts of information

The power of predictive diagnosis lies in correctly interpreting the relevant data. Bosch has been a partner for automakers in software development for control and diagnostic units for many years. In addition, in recent years, the company has significantly expanded the capabilities of the Internet of Things and data mining. Thanks to this experience, predictive diagnostics can now provide reliable information about the remaining lifespan of the most important systems and components in a vehicle, from fuel injection to the brake system. As technology develops, new components and algorithms are constantly being added to the system.
